Georgia's PM accuses Kallas of taking "shameful attitude" towards Georgia

13 July 2026 13:47

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has accused EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas of showing "an absolutely shameful attitude" towards Georgia after she said the European Union did not want to support the country's government.

Speaking to Georgian broadcaster Imedi on July 13, Kobakhidze condemned remarks made by Kallas in Brussels, where she told journalists that the EU wanted to support the Georgian people rather than the government.

Kobakhidze argued that Kallas' position amounted to a denial of Georgia's sovereignty and democratic choice.

"We have often said that there is one country, the Russian Federation, which does not recognise Georgia's sovereignty over 20% of our territory. And then there is Ms Kaja Kallas, who does not recognise Georgia's sovereignty over 100% of its territory," he said.

Calling her comments "an absolutely shameful attitude", the Georgian prime minister said they deserved "the strongest condemnation".

"When the European Union's High Representative goes against the will of the Georgian people and the Georgian people themselves, it is a very grave phenomenon," Kobakhidze added.

Earlier, Kallas said the EU had little engagement with the Georgian authorities and did not wish to support the current government, instead focusing its backing on the Georgian people.
