Georgia’s PM rejects opposition claims of election fraud
Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has dismissed opposition accusations of election fraud during the country’s parliamentary elections.
He also firmly stated that there would be no new elections, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
"Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili and opposition leaders, who have publicly raised claims of electoral fraud, are refusing to cooperate with the prosecution and are demanding fresh elections. This will not happen," Kobakhidze told journalists.
Kobakhidze emphasised that the Central Election Commission will soon finalise the election results, after which the first session of parliament will be held and the new government will be formed.
In his remarks, the prime minister suggested that the opposition is trying to maintain its prestige among its supporters following a decisive defeat in the elections.
According to the Georgian Central Election Commission, the ruling Georgian Dream party won the parliamentary elections held on October 26.
Opposition parties that secured seats in the parliament continue accusing the authorities of irregularities. Four such parties have refused to recognise the election results and are demanding new elections.
