Georgia's presidential election validated as majority of electoral college votes CEC reports

14 December 2024 13:14

Georgia’s presidential election has been officially recognised as valid, with more than half of the 300-member electoral college already participating in the voting process.

This announcement was made by Natia Ioseliani, spokesperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC)), during a briefing, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

"By 12:30, 170 members of the electoral college had cast their votes," Ioseliani confirmed.

"As more than half of the full electoral college has already participated, the election has taken place," she added.

Iosseliani also noted that voting would continue until 14:00, after which the CEC would begin counting the ballots.

Georgia is electing its sixth president on December 14. For the first time, the president will be chosen not through a direct vote, but by an electoral college consisting of 300 members.

Taking into account the Constitution and legislation of Georgia, all members of the Parliament, Supreme Councils of the Autonomous Republics of Abkhazia and Adjara, as well as members of the City Councils nominated by the political parties, proportionally, should be represented in the electoral college.

The sole candidate for president is Mikheil Kavelashvili, nominated by the ruling Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party. Kavelashvili is a former Member of Parliament and ex-footballer.
