Georgia stops firearms smuggling at Turkish border VIDEO
A 53-year-old Russian citizen was apprehended at the Georgia-Türkiye border while attempting to smuggle firearms into the country, the Georgian Interior Ministry confirmed.
The arrest took place at the Sarpi border checkpoint, where customs officials, employing a specialized scanner, uncovered a meticulously hidden compartment in the suspect’s vehicle. The cache contained 13 pistols of various types and nine magazines.
Authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the large-scale illegal importation of firearms. Under Georgian law, individuals convicted of such offenses face prison sentences of up to nine years.
The Interior Ministry emphasized that border security measures and advanced screening technologies were crucial in detecting and preventing the smuggling attempt.
