Georgia summons British ambassador following German envoy’s recall

On September 25, 2025, British Ambassador to Georgia Gareth Ward was summoned to the Georgian Foreign Ministry.

The diplomat had already arrived at the ministry building at the time of the report by Georgian media.

This follows the summoning of German Ambassador Peter Fischer the day before. On September 24, Fischer described his recall as an unprecedented diplomatic measure in the history of modern German-Georgian relations.

Fischer said before entering the ministry, “I was summoned to the Georgian Foreign Ministry. The summons is a form of diplomatic sanction. To be honest, this is very unusual. This is the first time in the history of modern relations between the two countries that an ambassador has been summoned to the Foreign Ministry.”

He added that during the meeting, he would listen to the ministry’s concerns but also strongly contest what he called unfounded and provocative statements made against Germany, himself, and other ambassadors.

Fischer also noted that he would use the opportunity to critique the current course of the Georgian government, which he said contradicts Georgia’s aspirations to join the European Union.
