Georgia tightens oversight of seafarer employment on sanctioned vessels

23 February 2026 15:19

Georgia is strengthening controls over the employment of seafarers on vessels subject to international sanctions.

The Maritime Transport Agency of Georgia can now verify information provided by ship crew recruitment companies against sanctions lists maintained by the United Nations, the European Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.

Recruitment agencies are prohibited from assigning Georgian sailors to vessels or shipowners included on international sanctions lists.

If a seafarer is already employed on such a vessel, the recruitment agency must immediately notify the Maritime Transport Agency, terminate the contract, and arrange for the sailor’s return home.
