Georgia, Türkiye agree on barter electricity swap scheme
Georgia and Türkiye have agreed to introduce a barter-based mechanism for the exchange of electricity, according to Georgian media reports cited by Caliber.Az.
Under the new arrangement, Georgia will supply electricity to Türkiye during the spring and summer months, when hydropower generation is high. In return, Türkiye will provide the same volume of electricity back to Georgia in the autumn, when domestic supply typically falls short.
“Now, in spring and summer, Georgia will export electricity to Türkiye, and in autumn it will receive back the same volume. The new rule will help manage excess energy from hydropower plants during the flood season and cover the deficit in autumn,” the reports said.
“The barter mechanism will not affect plants with guaranteed purchase contracts or contracts for difference if they have obligations to the market operator during this period,” the media noted.
