Georgia-US talks highlight Trump’s role in Azerbaijan-Armenia peace deal

28 August 2025 15:49

Georgia’s Ministry of Economy announced that Minister of Economy Mariam Kvirikashvili met with acting US Ambassador to Georgia Alan Purcell in Tbilisi to discuss priority areas of bilateral cooperation, including trade, transport, investment, and the development of the Middle Corridor.

According to Caliber.Az, citing Georgian media, the ministry reported that the meeting also underscored the importance of the strategic partnership between Georgia and the United States. The Georgian side expressed its interest in resetting relations with Washington and resuming close strategic cooperation.

During the discussions, Minister Kvirikashvili highlighted the significance of US President Donald Trump’s peace initiatives, particularly the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which she said has created new opportunities for development and connectivity in the South Caucasus region.

As a reminder, on August 8, a Joint Declaration was signed in Washington during a summit hosted by President Trump and attended by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The leaders endorsed a seven-point framework reaffirming principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the renunciation of force.

At the summit, the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia initialled a draft “Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Inter-State Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia,” with Trump, Aliyev, and Pashinyan serving as witnesses to the event.

A central element of the agreement is the creation of the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP), also referred to as the Zangezur Corridor — a transit passage through southern Armenia designed to link mainland Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave, enhancing regional connectivity and economic cooperation.
