Georgian analyst points to Baku’s leading position in region’s energy potential

12 August 2026 20:07

A former Georgian official has highlighted Azerbaijan’s unmatched energy potential in the South Caucasus, pointing to the country’s resources and expanding energy infrastructure as drivers of greater regional cooperation.

Petre Mamradze, who previously served as Head of the Administration of the President of Georgia and as a member of parliament, made the remarks while speaking to local media, as Caliber.Az reports.

Now a political commentator, Mamradze emphasized Azerbaijan’s substantial natural resources and significant energy potential.

He also pointed to the importance of President Ilham Aliyev’s focus on developing Azerbaijan’s energy networks and infrastructure.

According to Mamradze, plans to supply energy from Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan through Armenian territory and onward to Türkiye, together with the implementation of the Zangezur Corridor, could open new opportunities for regional cooperation and contribute to lasting peace in the South Caucasus.

“Currently, the idea is to deliver [energy] directly through Armenian territory, through Nakhchivan and onward to Türkiye. This is a very positive development,” Mamradze said.

His comments came amid Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, where he outlined his vision for the exclave’s role in the future transport architecture of the South Caucasus, with particular attention given to the Zangezur Corridor.
