Georgian lawmaker says EU commissioner "lost" to US

Georgian lawmaker Levan Makhashvili has accused EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos of losing the geopolitical competition with the United States.

Makhashvili, who chairs the Georgian parliament’s committee on European integration, said Kos had treated Russia, China and the US as enemies in the context of geopolitical competition, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

“She lost geopolitically to Russia — declared it an enemy. She lost to China — declared it an enemy. Now she has lost to America and, apparently, declared it an enemy,” he said.

His comments followed remarks by Kos that EU candidate countries should avoid building political and economic dependencies on Donald Trump’s “MAGA” movement, warning that such ties could conflict with the bloc’s long-term interests.

“We should not risk our future members building dependencies on others that run counter to our long-term interest,” she said.

Speaking at an event in Brussels, Kos identified Russia as an adversary in the EU enlargement process and said the bloc was also facing pressure from “MAGA ideologists” who question Europe’s political and economic direction.

According to Kos, China represented a different challenge, focusing on economic ties with EU candidate countries rather than the disinformation campaigns she attributed to Russia.
