Georgian MP: European Union may cease to exist

20 January 2026 10:59

The European Union may cease to exist in a few years, Georgian lawmaker Sozar Subari has said.

“The weakening and possible disintegration of the European Union is being driven by the misguided policies of EU leaders and leading European countries, while other major players are not preventing this. We see that Trump and his administration not only disregard the interests of European states, but also deliberately seek to humiliate them and exclude them from the game,” the MP said, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

According to him, the deployment of 30 soldiers to Greenland to protect the island is extremely absurd and vividly illustrates the crisis the EU is facing.

“All indications suggest that the EU will cease to be a global player, and it is not entirely clear how long it will continue to exist,” Subari concluded.

Trump revived and intensified this ambition in his second term starting in 2025. By early 2026, he escalated rhetoric, insisting the U.S. must achieve "complete and total control" of Greenland for defense reasons, including integration into concepts like his proposed "Golden Dome" anti-missile system. He argued that only the U.S. could protect it from adversaries, and he has not ruled out military force if negotiations fail

In mid-January 2026, Trump threatened tariffs on several European nations (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland) starting at 10% on February 1, escalating to 25% by June 1, unless a deal for U.S. control of Greenland is reached. He linked this partly to not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, claiming it freed him from purely peaceful approaches.

In response to Trump's escalating threats—including refusal to rule out force—several NATO allies (Denmark, Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands, and the UK) deployed small contingents of troops to Greenland in mid-January 2026. These deployments aimed to bolster NATO's Arctic presence and demonstrate solidarity. Denmark announced plans for a more permanent increased military footprint in cooperation with allies.
