Georgian MP calls EU visa suspension "last bullet in arsenal of blackmail"

24 December 2025 15:09

A Georgian lawmaker has criticised European bureaucracy, warning that the threat of suspending the country’s visa-free regime is being used as “the last bullet in the arsenal of blackmail.”

Irakli Kirtskhalia, a member of the ruling Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia party, told local media that Tbilisi does not expect “any adequate steps” from European institutions, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

“Frankly, we have no expectations that European bureaucracy will take any proper measures… The only thing left is the last weapon of blackmail they have in their hands,” Kirtskhalia said.

He highlighted that Georgia ranks among the leading candidate countries in implementing its Association Agreement with the EU, citing studies and data from the European Commission as evidence.

“Our main instrument in this situation is the truth and very clear, objective facts. The data shows that our country is at the forefront in every area,” Kirtskhalia said.

The MP warned that any attempt to link visa liberalisation to political pressure would be the “final and most insulting tool” against Georgia and its citizens, adding that all other levers of influence have already been exhausted.

“We will always remain faithful to European values, and the time will come when Europe returns to Europe… A day will come when these states and unions restore the dignity that was respected not only by Georgia but by the entire world,” Kirtskhalia added.
