Kobakhidze's remarks came amid expectations from the European Union for Georgia to undertake de-oligarchisation as a precondition for advancing towards EU accession negotiations. Georgia achieved candidate status for EU membership in December 2023, subject to fulfilling additional conditions.
"We believe that de-oligarchisation is crucial not just for Georgia, but also for the European Union and the United States. I am optimistic that efforts will align towards achieving this goal, thereby reducing external pressures on Georgia," Kobakhidze stated.
He highlighted the Georgian government's efforts over the past few years to uphold a positive perception of Western institutions among the Georgian populace, despite challenges posed by certain international figures critical of Georgia.
Kobakhidze regretted the influence of what he termed the "global war party" on various official structures, asserting that this group has significant sway both domestically and internationally.
Georgia's relations with Western countries have become strained, particularly following controversy over its stance on imposing sanctions against Russia. Despite accusations from Ukrainian authorities and European politicians, sanctions coordinators from the US, EU, and UK found no evidence to support claims that Georgia aided Russia in evading sanctions.
Overall, Kobakhidze underscored Georgia's commitment to maintaining a favourable relationship with Western partners while navigating complex geopolitical dynamics.
