Georgian PM accuses EU of double standards in relations with Tbilisi

20 August 2025 14:42

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has accused the European Union of applying double standards in its treatment of Georgia, arguing that the bloc’s current approach is unfair and influenced by external actors with interests contrary to Georgia’s peace and prosperity.

Kobakhidze reaffirmed Georgia’s strategic aspiration to join the EU but insisted that the country’s sovereignty and independence remain its foremost guarantees of stability, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

He warned against what he described as a false dichotomy being imposed on Georgia — a choice between European integration and the preservation of its traditional values and internal peace.

“When Georgia is asked to choose between EU membership and its core principles, that is a fundamentally flawed dilemma,” Kobakhidze said. “This country will not betray its values in pursuit of accession.”

His comments came in response to a recent statement by the EU Delegation in Tbilisi, which asserted that Georgia’s path toward the European Union represents a path to a safer and more secure future.

The Georgian official, however, challenged that narrative, claiming that Georgia outperforms not only other candidate countries but even several existing EU member states across key indicators. Despite this, he contended, the EU continues to treat Georgia unjustly.

Kobakhidze attributed this perceived imbalance to what he described as the undue influence of external forces over EU institutions — forces, he claimed, that do not support Georgia’s success or regional peace.
