Georgian ruling party responds harshly to Zelenskyy’s UN remarks

25 September 2025 13:56

Members of Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia, have issued a forceful response to recent remarks made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Zelenskyy stated in his speech that “Europe has already lost Georgia, and the situation with human rights and European-style governance is only deteriorating there,” Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

The comment sparked immediate backlash from several senior Georgian lawmakers.

Irakli Kirtskhalia, a member of the ruling party, called Zelenskyy’s statement “shameful” and accused the Ukrainian leader of disrespecting not only Georgia but also his own people.

“Once again [Zelenskyy] dared to speak negatively about Georgia, thereby first and foremost insulting his own people,” Kirtskhalia said.

He further urged Zelenskyy to consult the European Commission’s report on Georgia’s progress before making critical statements.

“Before insulting our country and calling on it to get involved in war, let this puppet wash his mouth out first — and only then dare to speak,” he added.

Maia Bitadze, another MP from the ruling party, echoed Kirtskhalia’s criticism. She claimed that Zelenskyy “will go down in history as the most reckless president who lost Ukrainian territory,” while asserting that “Georgia is ahead of Ukraine by all indicators.”

“I would advise him to focus on preserving the gene pool in Ukraine and not lead his people to total destruction,” Bitadze added.

MP Giorgi Chakvetadze also criticized Zelenskyy, accusing him of using the UN platform to spread “disinformation” about Georgia.

“We’ve heard such statements from Zelenskyy and his team many times, but the Georgian public understands well what lies behind them,” he said.

Kakha Kaladze, the Secretary General of Georgian Dream and the Mayor of Tbilisi, added to the criticism, advising the Ukrainian president to prioritize his own country’s challenges.

“I wouldn’t wish even an enemy to be in the position Ukraine is in. The Ukrainian people will deal with their president and government themselves, and we, the Georgians, will take care of our own country,” Kaladze stated.
