Georgian ruling party strongly rejects EU foreign ministers’ letter, accuses it of disinformation

13 July 2025 14:28

The ruling party of Georgia, Georgian Dream, issued a sharp response to a letter signed by 17 European Union foreign ministers and the EU High Representative, calling the document a “crude and unfair assault on the Georgian people and democracy."

In its statement, the party accused the letter of being saturated with “Soviet-style disinformation” and containing false accusations, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

Georgian Dream urged the signatories to exercise greater responsibility in such statements.

The letter reportedly intensified pressure on Georgia following the 2024 parliamentary elections, which, according to its authors, saw the Georgian people reject the return to power of an opposition linked to the “Deep State” and the “National Movement.”

Georgian Dream emphasised that the legitimacy of the elections was confirmed by the OSCE/ODIHR mission and statements from senior OSCE officials. The party highlighted that the EU’s criticism targets the election results rather than the voting procedures themselves.

“Besides objective reality, the legitimacy of the elections is confirmed both by the OSCE/ODIHR’s conclusions and by statements from high-ranking OSCE officials, including the recent declaration by the OSCE Secretary General that the 2024 elections fully reflected the will of the Georgian people. It is clear that European officials are displeased not with the content of the elections, but with their outcomes,” the statement said.

The political council of Georgian Dream also alleged a “democratic regression” in Europe, citing the influence of the “Deep State” across many countries. The statement pointed to migration issues, the decline of traditional institutions, and restrictions on media freedom as symptoms of this trend.

“We are not attacking anyone, but at the same time, we will never cease to defend our country, its sovereignty, identity, and the interests of the Georgian people. We will allow no compromises in this struggle. At the same time, we express full readiness to cooperate with any state that wishes to engage in fair cooperation with Georgia. It is important that everyone understands: just as Georgia needs Europe, so too does the European Union need Georgia,” the Georgian Dream political council concluded.
