Georgian speaker calls on EU to be consistent on human rights

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has called on the EU to be consistent on human rights, saying protecting them should not mean justifying actions that violate the rights of others.

He noted that they can debate the punishment, but condemn violence against a police officer; they can defend freedom of expression, but condemn insulting citizens, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

“This is the consistency we demand from the European Union,” Papuasvili added.

He criticised the EU delegation for describing musician Kordz’s insult directed at more than one million Georgian citizens over their political choice as an expression of creative freedom.

According to Papuasvili, instead of apologising, the musician received political encouragement from the EU.
