Georgian speaker decries Western inaction after presidential palace clashes

17 October 2025 16:13

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili condemned the European Union for failing to denounce the violent storming of the Georgian President’s residence, calling the silence “a shame,” Caliber.Az reports citing Georgian media.

The incident occurred on the evening of October 4, 2025, during municipal elections, when an opposition rally escalated into an attempt to storm the presidential administration building. The situation led to clashes with police and multiple detentions. Georgian authorities have repeatedly urged Western countries, including the United States, to condemn the attack.

“For the thirteenth day, Brussels has not condemned the violent storming of the presidential palace. This is a disgrace,” Papuashvili wrote on social media. He also warned that until the EU condemns the actions of extremist groups attempting to seize power, it will remain a supporter of such extremism.

During the October 4 unrest, protesters attempted to storm the residence of the Georgian President in Tbilisi, invoking the so-called “transfer of power to the people.” Law enforcement officers responded with riot gear and water cannons.

The clashes resulted in up to 25 police officers injured, 15 of whom required hospitalisation.

Authorities detained 46 participants of the rally and five organisers: Paatu Burchuladze, Murtaza Zodelava, Irakli Nadiradze, Paatu Manjgaladze, and Lasha Beridze. Investigative measures are ongoing.
