Georgian speaker: EU flag flies where violence, hatred, attacks emerge

07 January 2026 14:44

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili accused the European Union of fostering confrontation, hatred, and violence in Georgia, saying that wherever such acts occur, the EU flag is present.

He also criticised a post by imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili, suggesting that Christmas be celebrated on December 25 instead of January 7, describing it as part of external efforts aimed at deepening societal divisions, Caliber.Az reports via Sputnik Georgia.

“They do this so that people cannot agree on celebrating May 8 or May 9 (Victory Day), August 7 or August 8, December 25 or January 7. All of this is harmful external interference, previously led by the former US administration, which spent millions on it. The new administration has completely changed this policy. Today, the European Union is carrying out this work — bringing confrontation, hatred, and violence into Georgia. Where there is violence, the EU flag flies; where there is hatred, the EU flag flies; where there is malice and personal attacks, the EU flag flies,” he said.

Papuashvili added that Brussels is leading the European Union toward a civilizational abyss.
