Georgian speaker: EU’s enlargement policy has lost credibility

11 September 2026 14:30

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has criticized the European Union’s approach to enlargement, saying recent statements by EU officials have undermined their credibility.

Papuashvili was responding to remarks by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos that countries seeking EU membership should distance themselves from US President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement as part of their path toward joining the bloc, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

The Georgian top lawmaker questioned the consistency of the EU’s foreign policy and enlargement agenda.

“The EU’s foreign policy, including its enlargement policy, is so unprofessional that we can no longer take the statements we hear on this matter seriously. They publicly call on countries not to maintain relations with the US administration — how can such statements be taken seriously after that?” Papuashvili said.
