German chancellor calls for EU unity following Trump’s victory
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has stated that the EU must unite and act as a single entity following Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election.
"The EU must come together and act. As Chancellor of Germany, I am working on this," Scholz told reporters, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
He also emphasised that he had a phone talk with French President Emmanuel Macron on November 6.
"We will meet with other European heads of state and government in Budapest on November 7. We will closely coordinate our actions there and continue doing so in the coming weeks," the Chancellor added.
During his first presidential term from 2017 to 2021, Trump openly criticised European allies for not shouldering the financial burden of NATO, instead passing that responsibility onto American taxpayers.
Chancellor Scholz has acknowledged the political differences with Trump on various issues but emphasised that discussions will take place with the incoming administration to address these differences and align their positions.
“Germany remains a reliable transatlantic partner,” Scholz affirmed, stressing that Germany would continue to take responsibility and make significant contributions to the transatlantic partnership.
He also reiterated, “Germany and the US share a partnership and friendship that has grown over decades. We believe that we are better off together. We can achieve much more working together than against each other.”
