German Chancellor warns Iran war could hit Europe like pandemic
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz cautioned that the escalating conflict in Iran could have repercussions for Germany and Europe comparable to the coronavirus pandemic if it spreads across the region.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Syria’s transitional period President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Merz said the war is already affecting everyday life, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
Gasoline and electricity prices for households and businesses have risen for several consecutive weeks, while security measures around synagogues and Jewish communities have been strengthened,
“If this war escalates into a large regional conflict, it could hit Germany and Europe even harder, similar to what we recently experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic or at the start of the war in Ukraine,” Merz said.
The Chancellor stressed the urgent need to resolve the conflict and affirmed that Germany is prepared to contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz under the necessary conditions.
Merz added that comprehensive proposals have been prepared to be implemented through an international contact group, coordinating the involvement of countries willing to provide assistance, including Germany.
He also indicated plans to propose the international contact group to address the ongoing energy crisis and discuss measures to safeguard shipping through the strategic waterway.
