German FM stresses EU’s responsibility in securing peace for Ukraine
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has urged Germany to take a leading role in securing peace in Ukraine, stressing the nation's responsibility as the largest European state.
In a statement on January 20, Baerbock reiterated the importance of a strong European effort to ensure lasting stability in the region and safeguard countries vulnerable to Russian aggression, including Moldova and the Baltics, Caliber.Az reports via German media.
Baerbock called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end hostilities and pave the way for peace. "When we finally reach the day we all long for, when Putin stops bombing and troops can be withdrawn, we must ensure that war can never break out again in Europe," she said.
"This applies not only to Ukraine, but also to Moldova, where Putin is constantly attempting to destabilize the country. We need guarantees for the Baltics."
The Foreign Minister emphasized that Europe must unite in providing security assurances. "We Europeans must say that we will provide security guarantees," she asserted.
Asserting Germany's critical role in the peace process, Baerbock remarked: "And, of course, as the largest country in Europe, we must take responsibility for this peace. It is our task, especially as Germans. All other Europeans want this too, and that’s why we can make it strong together. But Putin must end this war first. That is the first step."
