Greek Independence Day parade sparks outrage over offensive Türkiye slogans Video

28 March 2025 13:10

In a controversial incident during military parade marking Greece’s Independence Day on March 25, students from the Hellenic Naval Academy were seen chanting provocative and offensive slogans against Cyprus and Türkiye.

Despite protests from Türkiye's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which voiced concern through diplomatic channels in both Athens and Ankara, the Greek government refrained from issuing any immediate comment on the matter until late March 27, Caliber.Az reports per Turkish media.

The chants occurred as the naval cadets marched past Syntagma Square and approached Omonia Square, with reports stating they repeated the offensive slogans three times during their procession.

The event was attended by newly-elected President Konstantinos Tasoulas and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Greek media, citing defence ministry sources, reported that the Hellenic Navy Command has launched an investigation to identify those responsible and to impose disciplinary measures. However, the incident has stirred significant debate within Greece.

Far-right figures have expressed support for the actions, while opposition parties, including the socialist PASOK and the left-wing SYRIZA, have condemned the behaviour, labelling it as a matter of "disciplinary misconduct."

The incident has raised tensions between Greece and Türkiye, with Ankara continuing to voice its dissatisfaction with the lack of response from Greek authorities.
