Southeastern Iran has been the site of sporadic clashes between security forces and armed groups, including Sunni militants and separatists. These groups claim to be fighting for greater rights and autonomy, while Tehran accuses some of them of having ties to foreign powers and involvement in cross-border smuggling and insurgency.
On August 17, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced that their forces had killed six militants and destroyed two hideouts in coordinated raids in the province. Explosives, detonators, and communications equipment were seized during the operation.
