Haber Global: President Aliyev's statement on Northern Cyprus - reflection of excellent relations
In a recent statement, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev reaffirmed his country's unwavering support for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), underscoring the robust ties between the two nations.
According to Cihat Yaycı, a political science and international relations lecturer at Istanbul's Topkapı University, Aliyev's comments reflect a deep-rooted and positive relationship between Azerbaijan and the Turkish-controlled northern part of Cyprus, Caliber.Az reports via Haber Global.
Speaking at the Antalya Diplomatic Forum, Aliyev made it clear that Azerbaijan has always stood by Northern Cyprus in its pursuit of recognition and autonomy
Yaycı also drew attention to a controversial meeting between Syrian transitional leader Ahmed al-Sharaa and the Cypriot foreign minister. Al-Sharaa's remarks, claiming that only the administration of Southern Cyprus represents the island, have sparked debate, especially considering Türkiye's significant influence in Syria.
Yaycı suggests that if Türkiye's influence over al-Sharaa is as substantial as claimed, Türkiye should have been involved in shaping the diplomatic narrative, ensuring that Northern Cyprus's foreign minister, Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu, is also afforded a visit to Syria.
