Haber Gobal: Iğdır-Nakhchivan pipeline to cut autonomous republic's dependence on Iranian gas

05 March 2025 16:55

The construction of the Iğdır-Nakhchivan gas pipeline will eliminate the autonomous republic's dependence on gas supplies from Iran, which can be seen as a success for Türkiye.

The program discussed the talks between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan about the gas pipeline project, Caliber.Az reports, citing a story broadcast on Turkish TV channel Haber Global.

The channel notes that every meeting between the two leaders results in serious decisions and their subsequent implementation.

"Each of their meetings covers strategic issues, and Ilham Aliyev's promises regarding Karabakh and the South Caucasus are gradually being implemented," the report states.

The story's authors pointed out that Iran and Armenia have previously attempted to "corner Nakhchivan."

"Nakhchivan is a bridge between Türkiye and the Turkic world. And there is no doubt that no gas pipeline passing through Nakhchivan will be under the control of either Iran or Armenia," the report concludes.

The Iğdır-Nakhchivan gas pipeline is an important infrastructure project aimed at providing natural gas to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Region from the Turkish province of Iğdır. The pipeline is designed to carry up to 500 million cubic meters of natural gas per year. This volume is expected to meet the gas consumption needs of Nakhchivan, which was previously reliant on supplies from Iran. The pipeline spans a distance of approximately 85 kilometers and connects the Iğdır region in Türkiye to Nakhchivan, delivering natural gas from Azerbaijan's energy resources.

The pipeline will bring natural gas from Azerbaijan’s gas fields, specifically the Shah Deniz field, which is a key source of Azerbaijan's natural gas exports.

The gas pipeline also symbolizes the growing cooperation between Türkiye and Azerbaijan in various sectors, including energy, infrastructure, and regional stability.
