Half of EU's electricity generated from renewable sources in 2024
Renewable energy sources accounted for 47.4 per cent of total electricity production in the European Union in 2024, marking a 2.6 per cent increase from the previous year.
This data was published in a new article released by the EU's statistical office Eurostat on March 19, Caliber.Az reports.
Wind power contributed the largest share of renewable generation at 39.1 per cent, followed by hydropower at 29.9 per cent and solar energy at 22.4 per cent.
Denmark recorded the highest share of renewables in electricity generation at 88.8%, with wind power playing a dominant role. It is followed by Portugal (87.4%, mostly wind and hydro) and Croatia (73.8%, mostly hydro). The lowest shares of renewable energy were reported in Malta (15.1%), the Czech Republic (17.5%), and Cyprus (24.1%).
According to the article, wind and hydro power accounted for more than two-thirds of the total electricity generated from renewable sources (39.1% and 29.9% respectively) while the remaining one-third of electricity came from solar (22.4%), combustible fuels (8.1%) and only around 0.5% from geothermal energy.
