Harris advocates "one China" policy while supporting Taiwan Playing both sides
Kamala Harris, the US Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate aims to implement a “one China” policy if elected, while also committing to support Taiwan's defence capabilities.
She articulated her position in a recent interview with US television, Caliber.Az reports.
When questioned about the possibility of the US using military force in response to a potential attack by mainland China on Taiwan, Harris remarked, “I’m not going to discuss hypotheticals.”
She reiterated the importance of adhering to the “one China” policy, stating that it encompasses support for Taiwan's self-defence capabilities and the necessity of ensuring freedom in the Taiwan Strait.
“We must keep communication channels open with China, particularly among military leaders,” she added.
Harris stressed that the US “must win the competition for the 21st century with China,” asserting the need to compete successfully without seeking conflict. However, she acknowledged that protecting American business interests must guide US actions.
In addition, Harris identified Iran as Washington's main adversary and emphasized her determination to prevent the country from acquiring nuclear weapons.
In her interview, she stated, “I think, obviously, one comes to mind. It's Iran. Iran has the blood of Americans on its hands.”
Harris underlined that ensuring Iran never becomes a nuclear power is one of her key priorities. When asked if she would consider military action if Iran developed nuclear weapons, she again opted not to discuss hypothetical scenarios.
