Heavy rains kill 31 in Brazil, leaves dozens missing
At least 31 people have died and 39 remain missing after torrential rains battered Brazil’s Minas Gerais state, CNN Brasil reported.
The fatalities were recorded in the Zona da Mata region, where 25 people were killed in Juiz de Fora and six in Ubá. The intense downpours triggered widespread flooding and landslides, causing severe destruction across the area.
According to the fire department, approximately 440 people have been left homeless. Rescue teams pulled 13 people from the rubble after buildings collapsed and mudslides swept through residential areas. In total, 208 survivors have been rescued alive and are receiving medical treatment.
Brazil’s Vice President Geraldo Alckmin said authorities have deployed the armed forces, including helicopters and heavy equipment, to support search-and-rescue operations.
Local media reported that residents who lost their homes will receive emergency financial assistance of 800 Brazilian reais (around $155). The funds will be transferred to local authorities to procure essential supplies, including mattresses, clothing, and food.
