How Chinese engineers realizing Thomas Edison's vision on modern warships DC power revolution

06 August 2024 07:41

Chinese engineers have achieved a major breakthrough in naval power systems by successfully implementing direct current (DC) technology on warships, a move that significantly enhances operational efficiency and reliability.

Unlike the traditional alternating current (AC) systems used by Western navies, China’s advanced DC integrated power systems (IPS) allow for rapid adjustments to the power grid, completing necessary reconstructions within milliseconds—an impressive feat compared to the minutes required by Western systems, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

According to Rear Admiral Ma Weiming, a leading scientist in the Chinese navy, China’s DC technology is at least one generation ahead of its Western counterparts. Western navies, having recognized the limitations of AC technology, are expected to transition to DC by 2027 at the earliest. Meanwhile, China has already integrated DC IPS into its naval fleet, enhancing mobility, maneuverability, acoustic stealth, and enabling the use of high-energy weapons like rail guns and laser cannons.

This shift in naval power systems represents a "third revolution" in ship propulsion, following transitions from human and wind power to steam, and from internal combustion engines to gas turbines and nuclear power. While the US and UK have opted for AC IPS, which involves periodic changes in current direction and has been prone to operational issues, Chinese engineers have embraced DC technology, which maintains a constant current direction and simplifies power grid management.

China’s DC IPS has addressed issues that plagued Western warships, such as the Type 45 destroyer, USS Zumwalt, and HMS Prince of Wales, which faced significant power failures and operational disruptions. In contrast, China’s warships, including the latest aircraft carrier Fujian, have demonstrated reliable performance, with capabilities such as supporting electromagnetic catapults using conventional power.

China’s success with DC IPS extends beyond military applications. The technology is also being adapted for use in civilian sectors, including new energy ships, electric and hybrid aircraft, rail transport, and offshore energy. This progress underscores China's leadership in modern power systems and its potential to revolutionize both military and civilian applications.
