Hungarian president rejects PM Magyar’s call to resign
Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok has rejected demands by Prime Minister Péter Magyar that he step down before the end of May, saying there are “no legal grounds or constitutional reasons that could justify” his resignation.
In an interview with Index, Sulyok noted that he intended to act strictly within the limits set by the constitution, Caliber.Az reports.
“I have sworn an oath of loyalty to the Fundamental Law and to the protection of the constitutional order, and that oath binds me both to the current majority and to the minority, and to the entire political nation,” he stressed.
Sulyok added that he remained committed to his oath and that, “as long as the performance of my duties does not become impossible, I intend to fulfil the responsibilities entrusted to me.”
“As I have said, the oath obliges me to the entire political nation, not only to the majority or the minority. This follows from the constitutional status of the President of the Republic of Hungary,” he said.
