Hungary reaffirms commitment to Russia ties, peace in Ukraine despite growing Western divide
Hungary has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining diplomatic and economic ties with Russia, as well as its support for a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.
In a televised address following a call with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó emphasized Budapest’s continued cooperation with Moscow despite growing divisions within the Western alliance, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
Szijjártó pointed to a "noticeable split" within the transatlantic community, contrasting the positions of different Western powers. “While US President Donald Trump is in favour of peace and his position is supported, Western European countries in alliance with Ukraine seek to continue fighting,” he said. “This complicates peace efforts and raises fears that the conflict could drag on longer and become more violent than expected.”
The Hungarian foreign minister reaffirmed that Budapest would not waver in its pursuit of dialogue and peaceful resolution. “Hungary will not back down from its peace-loving stance,” Szijjártó declared.
He also underlined Hungary’s intention to sustain its energy partnership with Russia, despite mounting pressure within the European Union to curtail ties with Moscow. Hungary continues to rely heavily on Russian energy supplies, particularly natural gas and nuclear fuel.
Szijjártó further reiterated Hungary’s endorsement of President Donald Trump’s peace plan, suggesting that it presents a viable path toward de-escalation in Ukraine. Although details of the plan were not specified, the Hungarian government has previously voiced support for diplomatic initiatives aimed at halting the conflict.
