Hungary's Orbán accuses opposition of foreign intelligence links ahead of election

10 April 2026 10:59

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has urged voters to support his ruling party, Fidesz, two days before parliamentary elections, claiming that his political opponents “would do anything to seize power.”

Sharing a video on April 10 on Facebook, he said the upcoming election would determine “not only the future of the government, but also the fate of the country.”

He listed his administration’s achievements, including policies on migration, energy, and Hungary’s stance on the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Orbán made it clear that the government had succeeded in lowering utility costs, protecting families from rising fuel prices, and “putting an end to illegal migration” through the construction of a border fence.

He claimed that Hungary had been able to “say no to war,” despite pressure from Brussels.

At the same time, Orbán warned of the risks of losing power, alleging that the opposition is cooperating with foreign intelligence services.

“They are conspiring with foreign intelligence services. They are threatening our supporters with violence. And they are already shouting about election fraud based on fabricated accusations, even before the elections have taken place,” the Hungarian leader added.

He accused the opposition of organising unrest even before votes have been counted, describing the situation as “an attempt to discredit and create chaos,” and called on Hungarian citizens to support him.

Parliamentary elections in Hungary are scheduled for April 12.
