Hungary's Orbán urges EC to support US plan on Ukraine
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urging her to support the US-backed peace plan aimed at resolving the Ukrainian crisis.
The leader is said to have shared his view on this development with the EU official on November 22, Politico reports via the text of his letter.
“Europeans must immediately and unconditionally support the peace initiative of the United States,” Orbán wrote. “In addition to supporting the U.S. President, we must without delay launch autonomous and direct negotiations with Russia.”
The prime minister also reiterated Budapest’s opposition to “the European Union sending any further financial assistance to Ukraine in any form” and said Hungary “does not consent to such a decision being taken in the name and framework of the EU.”
The report notes that Brussels is currently in talks with member states over how to use immobilized Russian assets to raise a €140 billion reparations loan for Ukraine, with the issue expected to come up at a December 18 meeting.
