IAEA chief warns against nuclear weapons proliferation at Moscow forum
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi emphasised that nuclear energy must be applied exclusively for peaceful purposes and that all associated risks, particularly the proliferation of nuclear weapons, must be eliminated.
According to Russian media, Grossi made the remarks at the opening of the World Atomic Week forum in Moscow.
“Nuclear energy should be used for peaceful purposes. Therefore, any nuclear facility, any nuclear power plant, and the results of their work must serve only peaceful goals and lead to peaceful outcomes,” Grossi stated. “It is necessary to minimise and fully eliminate all risks that need to be taken into account, including the spread of nuclear weapons, which must not occur, as well as to ensure full compliance with nuclear safety norms and standards.”
He stressed that these issues must be approached with the utmost seriousness, both in current operations and in future projects.
Grossi also highlighted the importance of ensuring broad access: “It is very important that access is guaranteed for all developing countries — in fact, for all states with nuclear technologies — provided that these parameters are respected.”
The World Atomic Week international forum, dedicated to nuclear and related industries and marking the 80th anniversary of Russia’s nuclear sector, is taking place on September 25-28 at VDNKh (Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy) in Moscow.
The event serves as the largest global platform in this field, bringing together officials from nuclear-developing states, government bodies, major companies, public organisations, nuclear professionals, scientists, and business leaders.
