Imposing sanctions on Iran would be absurd, Georgian PM says

17 September 2026 14:16

Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has said that his country is not imposing bilateral sanctions against Iran, calling such a step absurd.

According to him, however, Georgia is acting within the framework of the international sanctions regime, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

Kobakhidze noted that Georgia takes into account the sanctions regimes of its international partners and makes decisions in the aviation sector accordingly.

“Sanctions were imposed [by the United States], and since Georgia always takes into account sanctions regimes against various countries, we also made the relevant decision. We are not imposing any bilateral sanctions against Iran; that would be absurd and wrong,” he stressed.

Earlier, Georgia’s Civil Aviation Agency reported that the country would act in full compliance with the international sanctions regime following the introduction of new US sanctions against Iranian airlines.
