India considers snakes and crocodiles to patrol its borders
India’s Border Security Force (BSF) has directed its units to explore the possibility of using snakes and crocodiles to help guard sections of the country’s borders with Bangladesh and Pakistan in riverine and marshy areas.
The agency notes that deploying reptiles is being considered as a natural barrier in hard-to-access areas where traditional fencing is impractical, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Hindu.
The use of reptiles is in line with Home Minister Amit Shah’s directions, it says.
The initiative is still in the study phase due to potential risks to local communities.
India’s border with Bangladesh stretches over 4,900 kilometres.
Authorities have already constructed substantial fencing with floodlights to prevent illegal migration and criminal activity, but difficult terrain has hindered the installation of barriers in some areas.
