India urges citizens to exit Iran as security situation worsens

08 June 2026 13:31

Amid growing uncertainty following recent developments in the region, the Indian Embassy in Tehran has issued a fresh advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid travel to Iran and calling on those already in the country to leave at the earliest opportunity using available means of transportation.

The advisory comes against the backdrop of heightened security concerns triggered by military developments overnight. Indian authorities reiterated earlier warnings and urged citizens to prioritize their safety, Caliber.Az reports, citing Indian media.

In its latest statement, the Embassy of India in Tehran said: “In view of the latest developments in the region, the Embassy reiterates its earlier advice to all Indian Nationals to avoid any travel to Iran. Indian Nationals presently in Iran are also advised to exit the country by available means of transport.”

The advisory applies to all Indian citizens currently residing in Iran, including students, businesspeople, pilgrims, and tourists. It marks the eighth advisory issued by New Delhi since the onset of the ongoing Iran-related regional conflict.

Following the announcement of a ceasefire in April, the Indian Embassy had similarly advised its nationals to leave the country “expeditiously” and established a dedicated helpline to facilitate departures. The move was intended to encourage citizens to take advantage of the ceasefire period amid concerns that hostilities could resume.

According to available figures, approximately 7,500 Indian nationals remain in Iran. The embassy has previously coordinated the evacuation of thousands of Indian citizens through land crossings into Armenia and Azerbaijan.
