Indian company unveils revolutionary ethanol-powered engine for two-wheelers

30 September 2024 02:04

Bajaj Auto, a multinational automotive manufacturer based in Pune, India is making waves in the automotive industry with its recent unveiling of an innovative ethanol-powered engine for two- and three-wheelers.

The company has developed an ethanol-powered engine for its two- and three-wheel vehicles, reflecting the industry's shift toward alternative fuel sources, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Bajaj emphasizes that electric power isn't the only solution available. As the push for greener transportation intensifies, alternative energy options for two- and three-wheelers are gaining traction on the roads. While many companies, including Harley and BMW, have launched electric models, Bajaj is showcasing that alternatives can extend beyond electric options.   Though this is Bajaj's first ethanol-powered engine, ethanol technology is not new, with companies like TVS Motor Company and Honda already incorporating it into their products. By entering the ethanol market, Bajaj is contributing to the expansion of alternative fuel systems within the automotive sector.

Bajaj has not yet disclosed whether the new engine will enhance existing models or be part of a completely new product line. Set to debut before the end of September 2024, the ethanol-engine follows the recent launch of the first compressed natural gas motorcycle by Bajaj. The production version of the ethanol engine is expected to be unveiled by the end of 2024.   It is likely that this engine will serve as an upgrade to existing models, with the Pulsar being a strong contender. This popular model would allow Bajaj to reduce production costs by updating rather than creating an entirely new design from scratch.   Ethanol represents a significant addition to green energy alternatives.

Ethanol-powered engines provide a relatively inexpensive energy source that generates less pollution compared to gasoline. Made from plant materials, ethanol is currently blended into gasoline at a rate of 10 per cent to enhance combustion efficiency and decrease air pollution.   In the US, most ethanol is derived from corn starch biomass, although it has lower energy content per gallon compared to gasoline, requiring larger quantities to achieve the same performance. As a renewable fuel source, ethanol presents a viable option for reducing dependence on fossil fuels while also supporting agricultural jobs and utilizing existing automotive technology.   Globally, interest in alternative fuels is on the rise.

Japan, in particular, leads in hydrogen production, accounting for nearly a quarter of the world's hydrogen-related patents between 2011 and 2020. The country aims to boost hydrogen usage by 12 million tons by 2024 and has pledged to invest $98.8 billion in hydrogen technology over the next 15 years. Bajaj's introduction of new two- and three-wheelers is gradually increasing the presence of alternative fuel options on the road.

Although electric vehicles remain the frontrunners, nations like India and Japan are exploring alternatives to fossil fuels to enhance consumer choices. A sustainable future is vital for the health of our planet, and the automotive industry is leading this important shift.
