Indonesia floods death toll surpasses 630 as more missing recovered
The death toll from devastating floods and landslides on Indonesia’s Sumatra island rose to 631 on December 2, as the search for missing persons goes on, according to the country’s disaster management agency.
Government agencies and humanitarian organisations are rushing to provide assistance to those affected, while rescue teams continue searching for 472 people still listed as missing, Caliber.Az reports via The Jakarta Post.
The disaster agency says that around one million people have been evacuated so far.
Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand have suffered devastation after a rare tropical storm formed in the Malacca Strait unleashed torrential rains and wind gusts for a week that hampered efforts to reach people stranded by mudslides and high floodwaters.
The government's recovery efforts include restoring roads, bridges and telecommunications services. More than 28,000 homes have been damaged in Indonesia and 1.5 million people affected, according to the disaster agency.
