Indonesian president reluctant to visit US, fears golfing with Trump
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto revealed that US President Donald Trump has extended an invitation to the United States around September or October 2025 in the course of "tough" trade negotiations.
But Subianto is reluctant to accept the invitation, fearing that Trump might invite him to play golf. The Indonesian leader jokingly revealed that his golf game was "terrible."
The president told reporters on July 16 that the invitation followed a phone call between the two leaders a day earlier on import tariffs, Caliber.Az reports citing Indonesian media outlet Tempo.
Prabowo joked about feeling slightly reluctant to accept the invitation.
In the course of the intense discussions, Prabowo called Trump a "tough negotiator," but according to his statement to the press, the two leaders ultimately came to a mutual understanding.
Following the discussion, Subianto managed to convince the president to set import tariffs on US goods at zero percent, while Indonesian exports to the US will face a 19% tariff instead of the previously announced 32%.
