Trump declared in “excellent health” after annual medical exam

30 May 2026 14:45

U.S. President Donald Trump is in “excellent health” following his annual medical examination, according to a memo released by the White House on Friday, May 29.

The assessment was provided by Capt. Sean Barbabella, after Trump underwent his check-up on Tuesday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre, as per the BBC.

The president, who turns 80 next month, was found to have “strong cardiac, pulmonary, neurological and overall physical function” and is “fully fit to carry out all duties of the Commander-in-Chief and Head of State.”

After the examination, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that “everything checked out perfectly.” This marks his third known medical evaluation since returning to the White House last year.

According to the report, Trump—who is the oldest person to be inaugurated as U.S. president—scored 30 out of 30 on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, placing him “within normal limits” on the widely used cognitive health test.

The memo also noted that Trump had gained 14 pounds (6.3 kg) since his previous medical exam in April 2025. Barbabella said the president has received guidance on diet, physical activity, and continued weight loss.

Trump’s cardiac age was estimated to be approximately 14 years younger than his actual age. Barbabella added that the president’s demanding routine, including high-level meetings, public engagements, and regular physical activity, “continues to support his overall well-being.”

Health concerns had surfaced last year after visible bruising on Trump’s hands and swelling in his legs. In July, it was disclosed that he had been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a condition in which leg veins struggle to return blood to the heart, leading to pooling and swelling in the lower limbs.

While the memo acknowledged some “slight lower leg swelling,” it stated there had been “improvement from last year.”

The report attributed bruising on Trump’s hands to being “consistent with minor soft tissue irritation related to frequent handshaking” while taking aspirin for “cardiovascular prevention.” Barbabella noted that such bruising is “a common and benign effect of aspirin therapy.”

In addition to aspirin, Trump is taking two medications to control cholesterol and remains up to date on preventive screenings and immunizations.

Trump has previously discussed his aspirin use, telling The Wall Street Journal that he takes 325 mg daily—higher than the commonly recommended 81 mg—because he does not “want thick blood pouring through my heart.”

He has also said he avoids most forms of regular exercise aside from playing golf. “I just don't like it. It's boring,” Trump said. “To walk on a treadmill or run on a treadmill for hours and hours like some people do, that's not for me.”

Although annual presidential medical exams are not mandatory, they have become a routine practice in recent decades. The health of former President Joe Biden, who was 78 when he took office in 2021, drew significant public attention toward the end of his term.
