Three Latvian climbers dead after high-altitude accident in Alaska
Three Latvian climbers have died following an accident on Denali, the highest peak in North America, according to the information released by the Latvian Mountaineering Federation.
The incident involved a group of seven climbers. One additional member has been hospitalised in critical condition, while the three others survived after descending from the mountain. The federation described those who died as “talented and experienced” climbers.
Denali, also known as Mount McKinley, is located in Alaska in the United States and rises to nearly 6,200 meters.
According to Denali National Park and Preserve, park rangers received an emergency call on Thursday night reporting that four climbers had fallen during an ascent in the Denali Pass area at an altitude exceeding 5,500 meters.
After the fall, the remaining three members of the expedition provided assistance to the injured climbers. They later made their way down to a base camp situated at approximately 5,100 meters.
Further details about the cause of the accident have not been disclosed.
