Iran accuses US of violating international law after Bandar Abbas strike

28 May 2026 16:19

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has strongly condemned what he described as a US military attack on areas in Bandar Abbas in the early hours of May 28, accusing Washington of flagrantly violating Iran’s sovereignty and breaching fundamental principles of international law.

According to a statement published by Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Baghaei said the alleged US actions constituted a violation of Iran’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as a “gross violation” of international law and the United Nations Charter.

The Iranian official called on the UN Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities and hold the United States accountable for what he described as “aggression.”

Baghaei also accused Washington of continuing to violate the ceasefire regime through attacks on commercial shipping in the Persian Gulf and international waters, as well as recent airstrikes targeting southern regions of Iran.

He stated that Tehran reserves the right to take “all necessary measures” to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which concerns the right to self-defence.

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson further condemned threats made by US officials against Iran and several countries in the region, while expressing solidarity with Oman.

Baghaei described threats involving the “destruction” of a UN member state as a dangerous example of the normalization of the use of force in international relations.
