Iran claims "victory" amid pause in war with US, Israel forces

08 April 2026 12:19

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has declared a “victory” in the standoff with the United States and Israel, stating that Washington has made sweeping commitments as part of efforts to end hostilities.

The council said the outcome reflects the “resilience and wisdom” of the country’s leadership and the unity of its population. The statement added that, pending finalisation of the details of a peace settlement, national cohesion would remain essential, Caliber.Az reports per Iran's Tasnim.

The council claimed that the United States had pledged to respect Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, recognise Tehran’s right to enrich uranium, withdraw US armed forces from the region and halt military operations across multiple fronts, including actions involving Lebanon.

In addition, the Iranian side said Washington had committed to paying compensation and lifting both primary and secondary sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced Washington has agreed to pause bombing operations against Iran for two weeks following talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, on the condition of the full, immediate, and secure reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Moreover, in a similar manner, earlier White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt commented on the pause, noting that “This is a victory for the United States that President Trump and our incredible military made happen.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that an immediate ceasefire agreement has been reached and said both sides have been invited to Islamabad for further negotiations. According to him, the meeting could take place on April 10 and is expected to serve as a platform for finalising the agreement and resolving remaining differences.
