Iran declares Hormuz sovereignty non-negotiable in US peace talks
The head of the Iranian parliament's National Security Committee said that control over the Strait of Hormuz is non-negotiable, according to Iran International.
“Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz is essential to any peace deal with the United States,” Ebrahim Azizi, the head of the Iranian parliament's National Security Committee, said.
Note that the US and Iran are reportedly discussing a phased plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy shipping route, approximately 30 days after a formal agreement to end hostilities is reached, according to Nikkei.
Under the proposed framework, Iran would carry out demining operations in the waterway during the 30-day transition period following a ceasefire agreement. Once completed, commercial and military vessels from all countries would be allowed to transit freely and safely, restoring conditions similar to those prior to the reported disruption of the strait.
The plan would also see Iran refrain from imposing transit fees on shipping passing through the passage, the report said.
The ceasefire, initially agreed in early April, is also expected to be extended for an additional 60 days.
