Iran denounces US sanctions on Cuba as violation of international law
The spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baghaei, has issued a strong condemnation of the intensification of the United States’ economic blockade against Cuba, denouncing what he described as continued efforts to exert pressure on the island nation. He reaffirmed Iran’s solidarity with both the Cuban government and its people.
According to a statement released by the press service of Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Baghaei characterized the longstanding sanctions regime as a grave breach of international legal norms, Caliber.Az reports.
“Without a doubt,” he stated, “the economic sanctions imposed on Cuba represent a clear violation of the fundamental principles and norms enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and in international law.”
He specifically cited the right of peoples to self-determination, the obligation to respect national sovereignty, and the prohibition against interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states.
Baghaei further asserted that the United States must be held accountable for what he described as systematic and ongoing violations of these principles. He argued that the cumulative impact of the sanctions has led to widespread infringements of the Cuban people’s human rights, adding that such actions could be construed as amounting to crimes against humanity.
