Iran executes protester over attack on military facility in Tehran
Iran has executed Amirhossein Hatami a participant in the January protests, for attacking a classified military facility in Tehran, according to the Judiciary’s Media Centre.
Authorities said that Hatami, along with other participants, had set fire to and destroyed the facility in an effort to obtain firearms and ammunition, openly declaring his intent to overthrow the regime, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.
During questioning, he reportedly admitted that his participation in the riots was aimed at toppling the government and that he targeted the facility to acquire weapons.
Following his arrest by the Intelligence Organisation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Hatami provided a detailed account of his actions. The court sentenced him to death and ordered the confiscation of his property, with the sentence carried out earlier on the day of the announcement.
Another man was hanged on April 2 after being convicted of collaborating with Israel during the January protests.
Anti-regime protests swept across Iran in January but were repressed in the biggest crackdown in the history of the Islamic Republic, with thousands of protesters reportedly killed by the regime’s security forces.
