Iran executes two men convicted of killing security officers

28 July 2026 09:27

Iranian authorities have carried out the death sentences of two men convicted over the killing of security personnel during protests in Isfahan earlier this year, according to a statement by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

"Minutes ago, the death sentences of Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani and Amirhossein Safari Hosseinabadi, two individuals convicted over the crime committed at Alikhani Square in Isfahan during the January 2026 protests, were carried out.

These individuals tied law enforcement officers to a road sign with ropes, pelted them with stones, poured gasoline on them and set them on fire. While the officers were still alive, they dragged them across the ground before repeatedly stabbing them with knives and blades," the IRGC said in its statement.

Following nationwide anti-government protests that peaked in early January 2026 over economic grievances and calls to overthrow the Islamic Republic, Iranian authorities launched a severe crackdown involving mass arrests and a surge in executions of those accused of killing security forces or related violence.

According to a report by Iran Human Rights, at least 23 protesters linked to the January events had been executed by mid-July 2026, including multiple cases stemming from the January 8 incident at Isfahan's Alikhani Square, where four officers were allegedly killed.
